Guided 1 Day Mount Muhabura hiking tour on your Uganda safari to southwestern Uganda. Enjoy a hike up to the summit of the steepest extinct volcano located in the borders of Uganda and Rwanda. Standing at 4,127 meters above the sea level, Mount Muhabura is the 3rd highest volcano in the Virunga Conservation Area after Mikeno (the second highest at 4,437m) and Mount Karisimbi (the highest volcano standing at 4,507m) in the massif. The dormant Muhabura volcano is located within Mgahinga Gorilla National park, home to the endangered gorillas, golden monkeys, birds and several other wild animals. Hiking can therefore be combined with mountain gorilla trekking to see the one and only Nyakagyezi gorilla family, Golden monkey trekking, Batwa cultural trail and birding among other activities done in the park. Muhabura is a local word meaning “guide” because the volcanic mountain was traditionally used as a guide by distant travelers. The closest volcanoes to Mount Muhabura are Mount Sabyinyo and Mount Gahinga both located in Mgahinga Park. Altogether, Virunga Conservation Area comprise of 8 volcanoes, which are Muhabura, Mikeno, Bisoke, Karisimbi, Sabyinyo, Gahinga, Nyiragongo and Nyamuragira. Among the 8, only Nyamuragira and Nyiragongo are active volcanoes.
The lower slopes of the volcano are covered by rain forests, which shelter primates, birds and insects. The steep slopes of the volcano make it one of the hardest volcanoes to hike in the Virunga Conservation Area. Day 1: Mount Muhabura Hiking Tour
Very early in the morning, have breakfast at Lake Bunyonyi Rock Resort and transfer to Mgahinga Gorilla National park in Kisoro. Assemble at the briefing point of Mount Muhabura for guidelines and safety tips by rangers. You will the start on the adventure ascending to the summit of the Volcano. Hiking time ranges between 5 to 7 hours depending on the speed of the slowest person in your group. You are advised to have a walking stick, porter, energy giving drinks and bottled drinking water. During your hike, you might see some primates, birds, insects and ground animals minding their business. The ranger guide will allow a few breaks for you to refresh. On reaching the summit, you will be amazed by the beauty and scenic views of the other Virunga volcanoes, Gorilla national parks and local communities. Have fun at the summit, take pictures, relax and enjoy this lifetime experience. You will then hike down to the bottom of the volcano and transfer to your next destination
