Bugungu wildlife reserve.

Bugungu wildlife reserve was first established as a controlled hunting ground in 1963. The reserve is located between Murchison falls national park and the shores of north shore of lake Albert. It is a small protected eco-system area situated in north-western Uganda, and part of Murchison falls conservation area which includes Karuma wildlife reserve and Murchison falls national park.

Bugungu wildlife reserve physical features are similar to the southern sector of Murchison falls national park; the reserve constitute a buffer zone for the southern boundary of Murchison falls national park. the vegetation consists of dry thicket with open savanna woodland.

The reserve is known for chimpanzees, lions, elephants, buffaloes, waterbucks, Uganda kobs, birds among other interesting wildlife.

Wildlife viewing.

The reserve is home to a variety of mammals you will see when you visit. It is known for a large population of Uganda kobs over 600, lions, leopards, oribis over 200, elephants, Rothschild giraffe, dik dik, sitatunga, warthogs, reedbucks, topis, elands, oryx among others.

Primate tacking.

Bugungu wildlife reserve is home to different primates which inckude chimpanzees, l’hoest’s monkeys, olive baboons, vervet monkeys, black and white colobus monkeys, patas monkeys among others.

Bird watching.

Bugungu wildlife reserve is a birder’s haven with over 200 species of birds. These include; Abyssinian, black headed gonolek, swamp flycatcher, gaint kingfisher, saddle-billed stork, double toothed barbet, doves, yellow throated greenbul, speckle-breasted woodpecker, eastern-grey plantain eater, black billed barbets, black bellied bustards, white browed sparrow weaver, dark chanting goshawk, black headed batis among others.

 

Nature walks

The reserve is endowed with beautiful views and landscapes. The reserve is dominated by savanna grassland which offers a great opportunity for nature walks and hiking. You will be guided by a game ranger as you walk through the savanna grassland, expect to see animals like the Rothschild giraffes, buffaloes, Uganda kobs over, lions, leopards, oribis over, elephants, Rothschild giraffe, dik dik, sitatunga, warthogs, reedbuck; Abyssinian, black headed gonolek, swamp flycatcher, gaint kingfisher, saddle-billed stork, double toothed barbet, doves, yellow throated greenbul, speckle-breasted woodpecker, eastern-grey plantain eater, black billed barbets, black bellied bustards, white browed sparrow weaver, dark chanting goshawk, black headed batis among others. s, topis, elands, oryx among others. Accommodations.

Unfortunately, there are no established accommodations in Bugungu wildligwe reserve, but camping options are offered. You can choose to stay in accommodations in Murchison falls national park. these include; shoebill campsite, bwana Tembo safari lodge, Paraa lodge, chobe safari lodge among others.

How to reach there.

The reserve is found between masindi and buliisa district. It can be accessed by road means and by air.

By air; domestic flights are organized by Aero link. You can board from kajjansi airstrip or Entebbe airport to Bugungu airstrip.

By road; there is Kampala masindi route which is approximately 313 kilo meters, the drive takes about 6-7 hours to reach Bugungu wildlife reserve.

Or you can use Kampala Hoima route which is approximately 292 kilometers, the drive takes about 5-6 hours.

When to visit Bugungu wildlife reserve.

The reserve can be visited all year round but the best time to visit is during the dry seasons of June to September, and December to February.
