Tour Plan
Very early at 4:30am, the driver guide from Engagi Safaris will pick you from your hotel or
residence in Kigali or Kigali International Airport. You depart the city before sunrise, allowing
for a relaxed drive with minimal traffic. The drive through north westwards offers
breathtaking views of Rwanda’s rolling hills, terraced farmland, and rural villages. The drive
time from Kigali to Volcanoes National Park is roughly 2.5 to 3 hours
Arrive at the Volcanoes National Park headquarters in Kinigi, register, verify the permit, and
attend briefing on the dos and don’ts of gorilla trekking experience. The briefing introduces
you on the gorilla behaviours, trekking rules/regulations and general expectations on the
gorilla safari. Still there, you will be assigned one specific gorilla family and grouped with
other 7 travellers to make a group of 8 people. At 8:00am, the actual gorilla trek begins.
Hike up and downhill in the forest searching for the allocated gorilla family. Trekking
duration varies depending on the location of the gorilla family and can range from 30
minutes to over 6 hours depending on the location of the gorillas and the hiking speed of
the slowest person in your group.
The search through the forest searching for the gorillas is an opportunity to see other wild
animals and birds which live in this bamboo forest. The trail passes through bamboo forests,
dense vegetation, and volcanic terrain. After meeting the allocated gorilla family, you will be
allowed to spend an hour in their natural habitat. Enjoy an encounter with the gentle
giants, learn about their human like behaviours and have fun. Take as many photos as
possible to but ensure not to use cameras with flashlight. You will then transfer to the
starting point and receive your trekking certificate. You will then drive back to Kigali for
overnight or departure
