Kibale for Chimp Habituation

Chimpanzee habituation in Uganda is excellently enjoyed in Kibale National Park. In Kibale Forest National Park, chimp habituation begins at the Kanyanchu Visitor Centre. Budongo Forest chimpanzee habituation permits cost USD 230 per person for all foreign nonresidents and USD 160 per visitor who is a foreign resident. Ugandans and the rest of the citizens of East Africa member states pay USD 90 per person.

When to go for a chimpanzee habituation experience in Uganda?

Chimp habituation is best done during the low season when there is a low visitor population in the destinations. The off-months to mark on your travel calendar are March, April, May, October, and November. It is also possible to travel during the peak dry months and engage in the active chimpanzee habituation that is from June to September or December to February.

• A distance of 7-8 meters must be kept away from the chimp community.
• Do not smoke, eat, or drink in the presence of chimpanzees.
• Avoid any body contact with chimpanzees.
• As per the law, sick persons may stay back without visiting gorillas.
• Use a flashlight-free camera for your photography.
• A valid permit is required of anyone who plans to engage in the chimpanzee habituation experience.
• Do not sneeze or cough in the presence of chimpanzees without covering your nose or mouth.

Chimpanzee Habituation Vs Chimp Trek

During chimpanzee habituation, visitors are allowed to explore only the unhabituated chimpanzee communities. The normal chimpanzee trek involves visiting an already habituated chimpanzee community.

Chimpanzee habituation can go for half a day or a full day. Chimpanzee trekking starts at around 8:00 am and runs for 2-4 hours.

On a normal chimp trek, visitors are allowed to spend a maximum of an hour with chimpanzees unlike longer hours about 4 during the chimpanzee habituation experience.
