Eco Friendly Travel tips

An African safari is an adventure everyone should experience at least once in their lifetime.

We want people to enjoy these experiences for many generations to come so it’s important to us at Engagi Safaris to practice sustainable tourism. Sustainable or Eco-tourism is about leaving a positive impact on the surrounding environment you are traveling in.

We do this by supporting local communities and conservation efforts for the local wildlife and land and aiding in the growth of healthy tourism so we can all benefit.

Here are our top tips for a sustainable and eco-friendly Safari:

Learn about your destination

It’s important that you know about the country you will be traveling too. About its language, culture, history, and laws. Consult with our tour operators who have a wealth of knowledge and experience of the countries you will be visiting.

Respect all wildlife, their space, and habitat.

It’s important to be respectful. Remember while on safari you are in that animals’ home. Observe them quietly and from a safe distance.

Be conscious of what you are taking and leaving.

The saying takes only photographs, leave only footprints should be your motto as a traveler.Never litter and always dispose of your waste responsibly. For example, shampoos and conditioners often contain harmful non-biodegradable materials. Showers often drain into the soil so you can do your part in preserving the land by checking the ingredients list for the word’s ‘’biodegradable’’ or ‘’organic’’. The same for sun creams if you plan to go swimming.

Abide by the National Parks Rules and regulations.

Most parks list their rules as you enter. These are in place for your safety, wildlife, and the environment. Please stick to the designated routes and pathways, off-road driving can be very harmful to the wildlife and habitat. You as a tourist are responsible for ensuring these rules are abided by just as much as your guide and driver are.

Purchase souvenirs from locals.

This is a direct way you can support the local communities while purchasing beautifully handcrafted gifts to bring home to your friends and family. However please be conscious of what you do buy that it is not unethical or illegal. Purchasing items like ivory, rhino horns, coral, tortoiseshell, reptile skins, and plants harm the community and encourages further illegal activity.
