Kibale is known for its dense tropical rainforest, with towering trees, lush undergrowth, and a rich diversity of animals, birds, and plants.

The park’s dense canopy and mix of forest, grasslands, and wetlands make it an ideal home for various species, particularly primates. Kibale is home to 13 different species of primates, including the famous chimpanzees, making it one of the best places to go chimpanzee tracking in the world.

History of Kibale

Kibale Forest has a long and fascinating history. It was initially established as a forest reserve in 1932 and remained under government protection for many years. However, it wasn’t until 1993 that Kibale Forest was officially gazetted as a national park. This was done to protect its unique wildlife, particularly the chimpanzees, and ensure its preservation for future generations.

The decision to turn Kibale into a national park was also influenced by the growing importance of wildlife tourism in Uganda. As tourism in Uganda grew, the government realized the value of preserving Kibale’s natural resources, not only for conservation but also for the income it could bring to local communities through eco-tourism.

Since becoming a national park, Kibale has been managed by the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA), which works alongside local communities to ensure that the park is protected. Over the years, conservation efforts have helped maintain the park’s biodiversity, and Kibale has become a key part of Uganda’s tourism industry.
