False Bay

False Bay

Way back when GPS was just a dream, sailors coming back from their long journeys to the east often mixed up this beautiful bay with the more well-known Table Bay a little further down the coast. That’s how False Bay got its name!

Checking out False Bay

False Bay is this huge C-shaped curve along the coastline, located to the southeast of Table Mountain. Can you believe it? At its widest point, the bay stretches an incredible 30km (19 mi) across! It’s no surprise that the bay is filled with plenty of long sandy beaches, and a few of them have managed to stay untouched by urban development.

In the western corner of False Bay, you’ll find the charming little fishing village of Kalk Bay. The harbour is a favorite spot, not just because of the amazing seafood restaurants, but also for the local fishermen who sell their fresh catch right off the boat. Some resident Cape fur seals have actually built a special connection with the fishermen, and they often strike a pose together for photos. You’ll find a fantastic mix of art galleries, vintage bookshops, antique dealers, and amazing restaurants along the main road in Kalk Bay.

Finding it out

Just a short drive from Kalk Bay, you’ll find the heart of Cape Town’s surf scene, Muizenberg. It’s an awesome spot for anyone picking up surfing, attracting adventurous folks of all ages. You’ll definitely catch the chill surf vibe in town, especially at Surfer’s Corner. This great strip along the water with restaurants, pubs, and surf shops really brings the scene to life.

You can enjoy a stunning 40km (25 mi) stretch of beach starting from Muizenberg, all the way along the inner curve of Table Bay, reaching out to the Helderberg region, where you’ll find the lovely towns of Somerset West, Strand, and Gordon’s Bay. Somerset West, located a bit inland, is often thought of as a lesser-known spot with some really charming wine farms tucked away. Strand is definitely the go-to spot for shopping and business, but if you’re looking for a more laid-back vibe, Gordon’s Bay has some charming little beaches that are perfect for families.
