Victoria & Alfred Waterfront

Victoria & Alfred Waterfront

The Victoria and Alfred Waterfront, located in Africa’s oldest operating harbour, is actually the most popular spot in all of South Africa. Can you believe the waterfront draws in a whopping 24 million visitors every year? It’s no wonder when you think about where it is, because this isn’t just your typical fishy-smelling, seagull-filled harbor: Table Mountain, with its flat top, really stands out and makes a beautiful backdrop for all the quays, canals, and those cool repurposed industrial buildings around.

Exploring the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront

The V&A Waterfront, which most people just call it, is split into nine different areas. The Quays District really draws people in with its luxury brand shopping center, a bunch of great restaurants by the water, and fun outdoor spots like an amphitheater, a Ferris wheel, and places for buskers to perform.

The Dry Dock District is a strong contender too, featuring an indoor food market, the Watershed craft and design market, an aquarium, and a well-loved comedy club. You’ll find the Silo District just around the corner, packed with designer outlets, fancy hotels, and the Zeitz MOCAA, which is Africa’s top contemporary art museum. Battery Park, which just opened in the Canal District, features a piazza by the canal, a park, and sports fields, plus you can enjoy some watersports in the canals. The V&A Waterfront is a favorite spot for all kinds of travelers, thanks to its central location and a wide range of hotels, restaurants, and shops.

Key Points

There are all sorts of boat, yacht, and ferry tours running every day from the V&A Waterfront, but it all depends on the weather. One of the most popular tours takes you to Robben Island, the place where Nelson Mandela, a Nobel Peace Prize winner, spent 18 years in prison during Apartheid. He later became South Africa’s first democratically elected president.
The V&A Waterfront is home to some amazing museums. You can check out the Zeitz MOCAA, which is the biggest contemporary African art museum on the continent. There’s also the historical Robben Island Museum, the Iziko Maritime Museum, and the fun Springbok Experience Rugby Museum.

Here’s some practical advice for you.

If you’re coming from Cape Town International Airport, it’s just a quick 25-minute drive on the N2 highway to get you right to the V&A Waterfront. You’ll find all the big car rental companies right at the airport, plus there are regular shuttles, buses, and taxis that take you straight to the V&A.
If you’re not planning to drive a lot or venture far from Cape Town, you really don’t need a rental car to navigate the inner city easily. The city has a great public bus system, known as MyCity, that stops at all the key spots you’d want to check out. On the other hand, there are plenty of taxi services that can get you from A to B in no time.

You’ll find the V&A Waterfront buzzing with activity during the summer holiday season in December and January. During this time, the Waterfront really comes alive with events, festivals, exhibitions, live music, and art performances. Just a heads up, though—it can get pretty crowded!
