Development in Cape Agulhas improves Africa’s southernmost experience:

This week, South Africa’s Department of Tourism celebrated the near completion of the Lighthouse Precinct project in Cape Agulhas National Park. This is part of a larger R94 million investment in 25 tourism upgrade projects throughout the country.

Improving Visitor Experiences at Cape Agulhas

If you’re visiting Cape Town, you definitely have to check out Cape Agulhas. It’s pretty special because it’s the southernmost point of the continent! This difference really makes it stand out from the incredibly rugged Cape Point, which many people mistakenly think is the southern tip of Africa. So, this amazing spot, which is really a geographical wonder, had over 26,500 visitors in 2023. That’s about 31% fewer than in 2019, when it hit its peak with 38,271 visitors.

The Cape Agulhas project, which has two phases, wrapped up its first phase in 2018. Tourism Minister Patricia de Lille visited the park on Tuesday and mentioned that this is more than just an upgrade to the infrastructure. De Lille mentioned that the improvements aim to boost visitor numbers and motivate tourists to stay longer in the area.

Important Highlights of the Cape Agulhas Phase 2 Upgrade

We’re making some exciting upgrades! We’re adding a new restaurant, an interpretation centre with vendor stalls, a lecture theatre, and giving our reception areas a fresh look.
Community Benefits: We’ve employed 77 people, including youth and women, and worked with local subcontractors.
We’re at 73% completion right now, and we’re aiming to wrap things up by June.

The Cape Agulhas Lighthouse Precinct Project is one of the department’s ongoing maintenance efforts. Out of 25 projects, 22 are nearly finished, while three are still in the works. De Lille shared some exciting details about various community-based tourism infrastructure projects that are currently happening in the Eastern Cape, Limpopo, Free State, North West, Kwazulu-Natal, Mpumalanga, and the Northern Cape.

These projects are worth R676.44 million and have already created 605 jobs. They’re moving forward with plans for a new Kruger gate up north to boost tourism in South Africa’s flagship park, even after some delays with logistics and community feedback. Kruger welcomed more than 1.6 million visitors from March 2023 to mid-March 2024, but it looks like we won’t see a return to those pre-pandemic tourist numbers from 2019 until 2025.

Did you know that Augrabies National Park in the Northern Cape is the only one of SANParks’ 19 national parks that saw more visitors last year than in 2019? Pretty interesting, right? De Lille is sure that putting money into improving South Africa’s tourism experiences will set the stage for more private sector investment.

“When the government invests in infrastructure, it sends a clear message to the private sector that we’re committed to enhancing our tourism offerings,” De Lille mentioned. “We’re really focused on mixing things up and expanding what we offer to tourists. Our goal is to stay a go-to spot that keeps people coming back for more.”
