This 10-day Albertine Rift Birding Safari is specially designed for bird enthusiasts seeking to explore Uganda’s most important birding habitats within the Albertine Rift region. Uganda is one of Africa’s leading birding destinations, hosting more than 1,090 bird species, including many Albertine Rift endemics that are difficult to find elsewhere in the world.

The safari takes travelers through some of Uganda’s richest forests, wetlands, montane regions, and savannah ecosystems including Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, Queen Elizabeth National Park, Kibale National Park, and Mabamba Swamp.

This journey focuses on Albertine Rift endemic bird species while also offering excellent opportunities for photography, wildlife viewing, scenic travel, and cultural encounters. The itinerary combines forest birding, wetland birding, and savannah birding into one immersive safari experience.

Tour Plan

Upon arrival at Entebbe International Airport, you will be warmly welcomed by your driver guide and transferred to your hotel in Entebbe.

Depending on your arrival time, you may enjoy a short evening birding experience around the hotel gardens or nearby shores of Lake Victoria where several waterbirds and woodland species can already be observed.

The day is kept relaxed to allow you to settle in and prepare for the birding safari ahead.

After an early breakfast, transfer to Mabamba Swamp for a guided canoe birding excursion through the wetland channels.

Mabamba is internationally known for the rare Shoebill stork and is one of the best places in Africa to search for this iconic bird species. Other birds commonly sighted include papyrus gonolek, African jacana, swamp flycatcher, blue swallow, malachite kingfisher, and various egrets and herons.

The canoe excursion allows close observation and excellent photography opportunities while moving quietly through the papyrus swamp.

After the birding activity, begin the scenic drive westward toward Kibale National Park.

The journey passes through changing landscapes including rural villages, tea plantations, forests, and rolling hills.

Arrive in the evening and check into your lodge near the forest.

Dinner and overnight at Kibale Rock Lodge.

After breakfast, begin a full day birding experience in Kibale National Park.

Kibale is one of Uganda’s richest tropical forests and supports numerous forest bird species including several Albertine Rift endemics.

Possible sightings include green breasted pitta, African pitta, little greenbul, black capped apalis, western tinkerbird, yellow spotted barbet, African grey parrot, and crowned eagle.

Apart from birds, the forest is also home to chimpanzees and several monkey species which may occasionally be seen during the walk.

After lunch, continue birding at Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary, a rich wetland ecosystem known for species such as the great blue turaco, papyrus canary, white spotted flufftail, and western nicator.

Return to the lodge in the evening.

Dinner and overnight at Kibale Rock Lodge.

After breakfast, depart Kibale and continue toward Queen Elizabeth National Park.

The drive passes through scenic crater lake regions and rural landscapes before reaching the savannah plains of the park.

Upon arrival, proceed with an afternoon birding game drive en route to your lodge.

Queen Elizabeth National Park hosts more than 600 bird species, making it one of East Africa’s top birding destinations.

Possible sightings include grey crowned cranes, African fish eagles, martial eagles, saddle billed storks, African skimmers, and numerous savannah species.

Dinner and overnight at the Mweya safari Lodge.

Spend the day exploring different birding habitats within Queen Elizabeth National Park.

Morning birding around the Kasenyi plains and wetlands offers opportunities to observe secretary birds, wattled lapwings, bee eaters, weavers, hornbills, and raptors.

In the afternoon, enjoy a boat cruise along the Kazinga Channel, one of Uganda’s richest waterbird habitats.

Possible sightings during the cruise include pelicans, African spoonbills, cormorants, kingfishers, fish eagles, and yellow billed storks.

Wildlife such as hippos, crocodiles, elephants, and buffaloes are also commonly seen along the channel shores.

Return to the lodge in the evening.

After breakfast, depart Queen Elizabeth National Park and continue southward toward Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.

The drive passes through scenic hills, terraced farmland, and mountain landscapes within southwestern Uganda.

Arrive near Bwindi in the afternoon and settle into your lodge close to the forest.

Bwindi is one of Africa’s oldest rainforests and hosts numerous Albertine Rift endemic bird species alongside its famous mountain gorillas.

Depending on arrival time, you may enjoy a short evening birding walk around the lodge area.

Dinner and overnight at the lodge.

After an early breakfast, spend the day birding within Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.

Bwindi is considered one of the best birding destinations in Africa for Albertine Rift endemics and forest species.

Possible sightings include African green broadbill, handsome francolin, Shelley’s crimsonwing, Rwenzori batis, strange weaver, mountain masked apalis, and regal sunbird.

The forest environment creates an immersive birding atmosphere with dense vegetation, misty trails, and continuous forest sounds.

Lunch may be enjoyed at the lodge or carried as packed lunch depending on the day’s movements.

Return to the lodge in the evening.

After breakfast, continue toward Mgahinga Gorilla National Park located within the Virunga volcanic region.

The scenic drive offers spectacular mountain views and beautiful landscapes as you approach the park.

Mgahinga’s bamboo forests and montane habitats support several Albertine Rift endemic bird species and unique high altitude birds.

Upon arrival, enjoy an afternoon birding walk around the lower slopes and forest edges.

Possible sightings include Rwenzori turaco, dusky crimsonwing, olive pigeon, and collared apalis.

Dinner and overnight at the lodge.

After breakfast, spend a full day birding within Mgahinga Gorilla National Park.

The park’s volcanic terrain, bamboo forest, montane woodland, and alpine vegetation create excellent birding diversity.

Birders may search for species such as scarlet tufted malachite sunbird, Archer’s robin chat, white starred robin, stripe breasted tit, and Rwenzori double collared sunbird.

The scenic volcanic environment also provides excellent photography opportunities and breathtaking mountain views.

Lunch may be enjoyed as a packed picnic within the park before continuing with afternoon birding activities.

Return to the lodge in the evening.

After breakfast, begin the return journey toward Entebbe.

The drive passes through scenic countryside, local communities, and rolling hills with possible stops at viewpoints and the Uganda Equator crossing for photography and relaxation.

Lunch will be enjoyed en route before continuing to Entebbe International Airport for your departure flight.
