Tour Overview

This 12-day Birding and Gorilla Trekking Safari offers a remarkable combination of Uganda’s richest birding destinations and one of Africa’s most unforgettable wildlife encounters, mountain gorilla trekking. The safari is designed for travelers seeking both exceptional birdwatching opportunities and immersive primate experiences across Uganda’s diverse ecosystems.

Uganda is one of Africa’s leading birding destinations with more than 1,090 bird species recorded within forests, wetlands, savannah plains, lakeshores, and mountain habitats. The country is also home to nearly half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas, making it one of the few places where birding and gorilla trekking can be combined into one extraordinary safari.

The journey explores famous destinations including Mabamba Swamp, Murchison Falls National Park, Budongo Forest, Kibale National Park, Queen Elizabeth National Park, and Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.

Throughout the safari, travelers experience canoe birding excursions, forest walks, game drives, boat cruises, chimpanzee tracking opportunities, and scenic drives through rolling hills, crater lakes, tea plantations, and rural villages. The itinerary is carefully paced to allow enough time for bird observation, photography, wildlife viewing, and relaxation.

This safari is ideal for birders, wildlife photographers, and travelers seeking a complete Uganda safari experience filled with birds, primates, landscapes, and authentic African nature encounters.

The Entebbe area supports several waterbirds and woodland species that provide a gentle introduction to Uganda’s rich birdlife.

Possible sightings include pied kingfishers, African fish eagles, herons, cormorants, sunbirds, and weaver birds.

The rest of the evening is reserved for relaxation after your journey and preparation for the safari ahead.

Dinner and overnight at Sienna Beach hotel.

After an early breakfast, transfer to Mabamba Swamp for a guided canoe birding excursion through the wetland channels.

Mabamba is one of the best places in Africa to search for the rare Shoebill stork. The swamp’s extensive papyrus vegetation and quiet waterways create ideal habitat conditions for this iconic bird species.

The canoe excursion allows close observation and excellent photography opportunities while exploring the peaceful wetland ecosystem.

Other possible sightings include papyrus gonolek, African jacana, swamp flycatcher, blue swallow, malachite kingfisher, white winged warbler, and several heron and egret species.

After the excursion, return to Entebbe for lunch and relaxation.

Budongo is one of Uganda’s richest tropical forests and is especially known for species such as Puvel’s illadopsis, chocolate backed kingfisher, white thighed hornbill, yellow footed flycatcher, and African dwarf kingfisher.

The forest trails provide immersive birding conditions beneath towering mahogany trees while also offering opportunities to see primates such as chimpanzees and black and white colobus monkeys.
