This 5 Days Flamingo & Waterbird Safari is a specialized birding adventure designed for travelers seeking to experience East Africa’s remarkable concentrations of flamingos, pelicans, storks, herons, ducks, geese, shorebirds, and other aquatic bird species. The safari explores some of Kenya’s most important wetland ecosystems within the Great Rift Valley, where alkaline lakes, freshwater bodies, marshes, and seasonal wetlands provide ideal habitats for hundreds of resident and migratory bird species.
Kenya remains one of Africa’s premier birding destinations with over 1,100 recorded bird species. The Rift Valley lakes are particularly famous for hosting spectacular flamingo populations that often number in the thousands, creating one of the most iconic wildlife spectacles in Africa. Beyond flamingos, these lakes support a remarkable diversity of waterbirds throughout the year.
This safari explores the bird rich habitats of Lake Naivasha, Lake Nakuru National Park, Lake Bogoria, and Lake Baringo. Together, these destinations offer some of the finest wetland birding opportunities in East Africa.
Apart from birding, travelers enjoy scenic Rift Valley landscapes, geothermal springs, dramatic escarpments, acacia woodlands, and opportunities to encounter wildlife including giraffes, zebras, buffaloes, hippos, antelopes, and other mammals.
This safari is ideal for birdwatchers, photographers, nature enthusiasts, conservationists, and travelers seeking a focused birding experience centered around Kenya’s magnificent lakes and wetland ecosystems.
Tour Plan
Upon arrival in Kenya, you will be welcomed by your birding guide and begin the journey toward Lake Naivasha.
The drive descends into the Great Rift Valley, offering breathtaking views of escarpments, volcanic landscapes, and open grasslands. Along the way, there may be opportunities to observe several roadside bird species including weavers, rollers, shrikes, and raptors.
Arrive at Lake Naivasha in time for lunch and relaxation before embarking on an introductory birding excursion around the lakeshore.
Lake Naivasha is Kenya’s largest freshwater lake within the Rift Valley and supports more than 400 bird species. The lake attracts a wide variety of waterbirds and serves as an important feeding and breeding area for aquatic species.
Possible sightings include African fish eagles, pied kingfishers, great white pelicans, cormorants, jacanas, egrets, herons, grebes, and African spoonbills.
The calm waters and scenic surroundings make Lake Naivasha an excellent introduction to Kenya’s famous Rift Valley birding circuit.
Dinner and overnight at the lodge.
After breakfast, enjoy an early morning boat excursion on Lake Naivasha.
The boat ride offers excellent opportunities to observe aquatic birds at close range while enjoying beautiful views across the lake. Hippos are commonly encountered during the excursion and often provide additional photographic opportunities.
Bird species that may be observed include fish eagles, kingfishers, African darters, pelicans, cormorants, grey headed gulls, and various species of herons.
After the boat excursion, continue to Crescent Island for a guided birding walk. The island combines wetland habitats with open grasslands and acacia woodland, creating a productive birding environment.
Apart from birdlife, the island supports giraffes, zebras, impalas, gazelles, and waterbucks that can be observed on foot.
Following lunch, continue birding around the lake margins and nearby wetlands while searching for migratory waterbirds, ducks, geese, and shorebirds.
Dinner and overnight at the lodge.
After breakfast, depart for Lake Nakuru National Park.
The park is internationally recognized for its spectacular birdlife and is among the most famous flamingo destinations in Africa.
Arrive in time for a full day birding game drive around the lake and surrounding habitats.
Lake Nakuru's alkaline waters support large populations of algae which provide food for lesser flamingos and greater flamingos. Depending on water levels and seasonal conditions, thousands of flamingos may be observed feeding along the shoreline.
Other notable bird species include African spoonbills, yellow billed storks, marabou storks, great white pelicans, pink backed pelicans, African fish eagles, pied avocets, black winged stilts, and numerous migratory waders.
The park also supports over 450 bird species and offers excellent opportunities to observe woodland and grassland birds.
Wildlife sightings may include black rhinos, white rhinos, lions, buffaloes, giraffes, zebras, and leopards.
